About the author

A few years back at the NC Zoo, one of the Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) was sitting uncharacteristically close to the glass, but being typically shy and not looking at anyone. I crouched down alongside him, camera poised, and waited.

After a few minutes, he glanced up, only for a second, to see why I hadn't left when everyone else had. I was ready, but lucky to have the focus this sharp when it occurred. I'm glad the photo gives no impression of how fleeting the eye-contact truly was.
