However, this year was notable in that most of my images, by a wide margin, were arthropods (which I still call &#8216;insects&#8217; solely for convenience.) I didn&#8217;t like &#8216;discarding&#8217; so many images that I felt were strong just to produce a <em>Best<\/em> and <em>Second Best<\/em>, so I created a post of ten more eager and excited finalists in ascending order. Click for the higher-resolution version to see the detail on these unidentified leafhopper nymphs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012Insects01.jpg\" alt=\"2012Insects01\" width=\"500\" height=\"528\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012Insects01.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012Insects01-400x422.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Mellow?&#8221;<br \/>\nI have a hard time defining what it is about the quality of light that makes this work for me, but the soothing nature of it offsets the menace of the spider. Or maybe it&#8217;s just me.<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t say for sure, but I think this is genus <em>Mecaphesa<\/em>, possibly <em>M. carletonica<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So those were the finalists that I couldn&#8217;t pass up in the <em>Insect<\/em> category. If you&#8217;ve read what I said about <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2010\/12\/on-composition-part-six\/\" target=\"_blank\">position and shooting angle<\/a>, I can follow that with saying only three of these were taken from a &#8216;normal&#8217; position, and the rest in various degrees of awkwardness, number 7 especially so. You might also note that none of them have the black background so typical of macro work<strong>;<\/strong> while I certainly have enough images like that, the ones without usually look much better, so it&#8217;s worth the effort to eradicate whenever possible, and I&#8217;ll talk more about this soon.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the Runners-Up across the board.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So as I mentioned, I went ahead and put together my best images of this year &#8211; or, as it really should be, my favorites, since no one is voting on these but me.
