So when working on my &#8220;Best of 2012&#8221; posts, I decided to use these categories (with the exception of the <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2012\/12\/2012s-not-quites-the-insects\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post<\/a>.) As mentioned earlier, two categories remain unrepresented because I didn&#8217;t add any images to them in 2012 &#8211; those are <em>Beach<\/em> and <em>Mountain<\/em>. Two other categories, <em>Mammals\/Carnivores<\/em> and <em>Sunrise\/Sunset<\/em>, were also badly stocked this year, and squeaked out a &#8216;Best of&#8217; but not a runner-up, and so are not seen here.<\/p>\n<p>So here are the second-place winners in their categories, listed alphabetically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aquatic<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AquaticRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012AquaticRU\" width=\"500\" height=\"658\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AquaticRU.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AquaticRU-400x526.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Rapacious&#8221;<br \/>\nGiant water bugs (<em>Belostoma flumineum<\/em>) are wicked freshwater predators &#8211; this one is snacking on a snail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birds<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012BirdsRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012BirdsRU\" width=\"500\" height=\"712\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012BirdsRU.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012BirdsRU-400x569.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Stabby The Heron&#8221;<br \/>\nMore of a favorite than a stunning image, since I love how the beak has pierced the fish completely. The great blue heron (<em>Ardea herodias<\/em>) wasn&#8217;t bothered by my presence, perhaps because I was knee-deep in the river and thus <em>simpatico<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insects<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012InsectsRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012InsectsRU\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012InsectsRU.jpg 730w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012InsectsRU-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Roguish&#8221;<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t have to explain anything, do I?<br \/>\n(See also the competitors in this category <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2012\/12\/2012s-not-quites-the-insects\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lakes, Streams, Waterfalls<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LakeRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012LakeRU\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LakeRU.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LakeRU-400x600.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Grande&#8221;<br \/>\nFroth in an eddy of the nearby river, resembling some creation of a barista. Or maybe not &#8211; I don&#8217;t drink coffee&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaves, Plants, Trees<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LeavesRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012LeavesRU\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LeavesRU.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012LeavesRU-400x600.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Schedule Conflict&#8221;<br \/>\nI think the image expresses the incongruous weather early in the year<strong>;<\/strong> this photo actually comes <em>after<\/em> my first bee &#038; flower shots. The light angle produces most of the detail, which is why I stress its importance so often.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reptiles, Amphibians<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012ReptileRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012ReptileRU\" width=\"730\" height=\"488\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012ReptileRU.jpg 730w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012ReptileRU-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Green Day&#8221;<br \/>\nThe green anole (<em>Anolis carolinensis<\/em>) really <em>was<\/em> over my head, so this is a natural perspective, and one that shows the scale detail quite nicely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenic, Abstract<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AbstractRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012AbstractRU\" width=\"730\" height=\"456\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AbstractRU.jpg 730w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012AbstractRU-400x249.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Multiverse&#8221;<br \/>\nJust dewdrops &#8211; some acting as lenses, some well out of focus. Leaving the aperture wide open prevented any hexagonal or octagonal shapes from the bokeh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Science, Miscellaneous<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012MiscRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012MiscRU\" width=\"730\" height=\"527\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012MiscRU.jpg 730w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012MiscRU-400x288.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Alert&#8221;<br \/>\nIt all just seems to come together for this image &#8211; diffuse light from the softbox, angle of view, and a cooperative pose from the snail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Space<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012SpaceRU.jpg\" alt=\"2012SpaceRU\" width=\"500\" height=\"598\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012SpaceRU.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/2012SpaceRU-400x478.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>&#8220;Textures&#8221;<br \/>\nWhile full moons are great by eye, closer looks benefit much more from partial phases, where the details and the geography are enhanced by the shadows. It&#8217;s easy to tell which craters were filled by lava, and which weren&#8217;t. I have to add that this is just a telephoto lens shot, with a Sigma 170-500mm.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s the collection of near-misses for the year.
