{"id":13510,"date":"2013-11-13T19:45:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T00:45:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/?p=13510"},"modified":"2013-11-13T19:45:59","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T00:45:59","slug":"nobody-else-knows-it-either","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2013\/11\/nobody-else-knows-it-either\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobody else knows it either"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t done this in a long time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>A hiss, a scrape, sometimes chittering<br \/>\nA dry leaf teases the pavement<br \/>\nGoaded by the wind which dares<br \/>\nTo vie with the sun for the rights<br \/>\nTo define the warmth of the day<\/p>\n<p>Not deigning to compete with the thunder<br \/>\nOr the driving rains, the season still<br \/>\nEmbraces sound, not in quantity,<br \/>\nBut in constance, the murmur of the crowds<br \/>\nOf dry grasses, erupting in surprise<br \/>\nAt the sudden gusts, themselves too fickle<br \/>\nTo stay for long<\/p>\n<p>The colors, by habit, cannot go unnamed<br \/>\nTaunting our senses with the hues<br \/>\nOf ripe fruit and new flowers.<br \/>\nA disguise, a hoax, they fade abruptly<br \/>\nLaughing at our responses<br \/>\nKnowing the winter will be revealed<br \/>\nBy their unmasking<\/p>\n<p>Misunderstood trees, bare and spindly<br \/>\nFlout ironic detachment<strong>;<\/strong><br \/>\nWearing a heavy coat all summer,<br \/>\nThey throw off their clothes<br \/>\nTo embrace the winter skyclad<br \/>\nFingerpainting dark lines<br \/>\nAgainst temperamental clouds.<br \/>\nClinging alone at a tip<br \/>\nAnd flashing defiance in the gales<br \/>\nJust one leaf ignores the directive<br \/>\nAnd waving smugly<br \/>\nLooks down on its brethren<\/p>\n<p>The sun, disapproving,<br \/>\nLowers its eye to glare sternly<br \/>\nThrough the licentious branches<strong>;<\/strong><br \/>\nWe look away from its gaze quickly<br \/>\nBut bear the memory of the contact<br \/>\nIn purple stain on all else<br \/>\nOnly for moments<\/p>\n<p>A roulette wheel of climates<br \/>\nSpins almost daily, to save us from<br \/>\nThe cloying monotony<br \/>\nOf dressing like yesterday.<br \/>\nIntrepid explorers, we brave<br \/>\nDark unexplored regions of our closets<\/p>\n<p>Impudent leaves, giggling and chuckling,<br \/>\nPlay upon manicured lawns<br \/>\nTo abandon themselves as their own forgotten toys<br \/>\nFostering screams of displeasure vented<br \/>\nWith monoxide gusts through plastic tubes<br \/>\nDrowning out the discussion of the air<br \/>\nAnd the branches<br \/>\nIn a wail of pointlessly saved labor<\/p>\n<p>The mornings bring patterns<br \/>\nOf frigid moisture staining<br \/>\nThe grasses and leaves like, well,<br \/>\nLike frost<strong>;<\/strong> To make a metaphor for<br \/>\nA most common metaphor itself<br \/>\nIs certainly meta, and probably<br \/>\nMisplaced effort<\/p>\n<p>To sit enclosed by walls and wrestle<br \/>\nWith ways to describe and express<br \/>\nMeans forgetting that words<br \/>\nAre mere substitutions<strong>;<\/strong><br \/>\nBetter to engage<br \/>\nMany more senses<br \/>\nBy seeking firsthand<br \/>\nThe experience<br \/>\nOneself<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>No, I&#8217;m not a poet (<em>duh!<\/em>) and to be honest, I don&#8217;t even <em>like<\/em> poetry. I just started messing around with ideas a little in honor of the season &#8211; and even <em>I<\/em> know how trite that is. So for everyone out there who&#8217;s into poetry or litritcher that wants to comment, just bear in mind the challenge of low-hanging fruit*<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"-1\">* Which is a stupid metaphor in itself. <em>Of course<\/em> anyone would go after low-hanging fruit &#8211; what kind of idiot would climb to the top of the tree for some? Is the higher stuff supposed to be better in some way, or more prestigious?
