{"id":18310,"date":"2015-12-31T11:02:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-31T16:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/?p=18310"},"modified":"2015-12-31T11:02:58","modified_gmt":"2015-12-31T16:02:58","slug":"a-year-end-retrospective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/12\/a-year-end-retrospective\/","title":{"rendered":"A year-end retrospective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years ago at the last day of the year, I posted a series of pics intended for blog posts that had simply never made it, and I am doing the same again this time, with one small addition<strong>:<\/strong> I am posting a photo taken within each month, and adding a link to my favorite post(s) for each month as well. It&#8217;s kind of like those TV programs that can&#8217;t be bothered with new content (or to pay their writers adequately) and lower themselves to doing a clip show. And with that kind of promising lead-in, we leap into the old year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>January<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/PalmettoFreeze.jpg\" alt=\"windmill palm Trachycarpus fortunei in freezing rain\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18311\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>This windmill palm (<em>Trachycarpus fortunei<\/em>) was decorated by a freezing rain storm, and I featured a number of other photos from the storm in a post back then. I was messing about with natural light and a short depth-of-field<strong>;<\/strong> naturally, the point that is picked to be in focus can affect the entire image. How much different would it have been if I&#8217;d picked the drop farthest to the left instead?<\/p>\n<p>January&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/01\/the-struggle-for-an-appropriate-title\/\" target=\"_blank\">The struggle for an appropriate title<\/a>. Literature it&#8217;s not, but I still like it&#8230; which probably says way too much about me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Termiteses.jpg\" alt=\"termites - that&#039;s all\" width=\"730\" height=\"441\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18312\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>February was really slow, but at one point I found a small termite colony (that I subsequently destroyed because, you know, new house.) I realized after preparing a few photos that I was too bored with the topic to post it, but here&#8217;s the evidence anyway.<\/p>\n<p>February&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/02\/freezing-my-balls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Freezing my balls<\/a>. Okay, it was a toss-up between that and <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/02\/on-the-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\">this philosophical one<\/a> &#8211; the former was something I&#8217;d wanted to try, and still want to try again, because I think it could be better. We&#8217;ll see what this winter brings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/VioletPlus2.jpg\" alt=\"wild blue phlox Phlox divaricata divaricata with crab spider Thomisidae\" width=\"400\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18313\" \/><strong>March<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite having a long stretch of really cold temperatures and a couple of nasty storms, the wild blue phlox (<em>Phlox divaricata divaricata<\/em>) got an early start. I spotted the legs of this little crab spider (probably <em>Thomisidae<\/em>) peeking out from behind the leaf on a previous frame, and coaxed it into better view for this one. Yes, this is the same phlox that was blooming a <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/12\/monday-color-45\/\" target=\"_blank\">couple of weeks ago<\/a>, and is <em>still<\/em> blooming as I type this, but it&#8217;s still warm here anyway.<\/p>\n<p>March&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/03\/whoa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whoa<\/a>. Because.<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LongWayFromHome.jpg\" alt=\"dead fish on hillside\" width=\"400\" height=\"566\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18315\" \/><strong>April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not great art here, but a bit anachronistic, because this was spotted well up a steep hillside several dozen meters above the nearest stream, and completely unable to have been washed there from further up, because there were no water sources at all above it &#8211; the hill peaked a few dozen meters above. <em>Something<\/em> had dropped it there uneaten, so apparently disturbed before it could consume its catch &#8211; an untold story in the woods, a lost meal. Poignant, isn&#8217;t it? <\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe not, but I still found it curious.<\/p>\n<p>April&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/04\/once-again-with-feeling\/\" target=\"_blank\">Once again, with feeling<\/a>. I <em>had<\/em> to go with the thunderstorm, one of many this past year.<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>May<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Leaf-footedScene.jpg\" alt=\"leaf-footed bug Coreidae on unidentified flower\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18330\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>A variety of leaf-footed bug (family <em>Coreidae<\/em>) perched on a funky flower as if looking to see if the rain has stopped. Note the antenna matching the line of the flower<strong>;<\/strong> this was no accident, but a specific change in shooting position to bring it out.<\/p>\n<p>May&#8217;s choice(s)<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/05\/time-mismanagement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time mismanagement<\/a> for the photos, but <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/05\/all-out-of-ifs\/\" target=\"_blank\">All out of ifs<\/a> for the scope of the project &#8211; it was a long time in the making.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/RosemaryBaby.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese mantis Tenodera sinensis portrait on rosemary plant\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18331\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>This one just didn&#8217;t get into the mix, even though I like the expressive quality of it, a kind of optimistic, almost-excited air. This is, naturally, a Chinese mantis (<em>Tenodera sinensis<\/em>) perched on one of the rosemary plants which effectively betrays its size (if you know how big rosemary leaves are, anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>June&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/06\/report-from-the-field-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\">Report from the field, part one<\/a>, the first in a series of posts featuring the photography of Jim Kramer during his trip to Alaska.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FierceWind.jpg\" alt=\"painted skimmer Libellula semifasciata dragonfly apparently blown by the wind\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18337\" \/><strong>July<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another that I liked but simply never found a place in a post. This is likely a painted skimmer dragonfly (<em>Libellula semifasciata<\/em>,) and while it looks like it&#8217;s coping with a stiff wind, the air was completely dead that day &#8211; this is just how the dragonfly had perched.<\/p>\n<p>July&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/07\/she-has-a-great-personality\/\" target=\"_blank\">She has a great personality<\/a>, perhaps my favorite photo of the year &#8211; but I&#8217;m weird, so you&#8217;ve been warned. I&#8217;m just very pleased with the way the portrait turned out on such a small subject. But it only narrowly beat out <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/07\/value-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\">Value pack<\/a> which has a collection of strong images itself. I know, I keep sneaking in extra links<strong>;<\/strong> some day I&#8217;ll pay for it.<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/YellowReallyWildflowers.jpg\" alt=\"unknown yellow wildflowers in detail\" width=\"400\" height=\"541\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18340\" \/><strong>August<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have no idea what these flowers are, but they were growing in tall spikes and I was convinced that, if I looked close enough, I&#8217;d find yellow crab spiders lurking among the petals. I <em>still<\/em> suspect I might see evidence of such if I keep looking through all the frames I took<strong>;<\/strong> this is the kind of flower that they would be well-camouflaged within. This is a tight crop for detail just to show how dynamic the blossoms are. If you see a leg someplace, let me know.<\/p>\n<p>August&#8217;s choice(s)<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/08\/too-cool-part-28-wholly-molty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Too cool, part 28<strong>:<\/strong> Wholly molty!<\/a> is an obvious choice, though I don&#8217;t want to forget <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/08\/making-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Making up<\/a>, especially for the anole photo. August really was a good month for posts, so check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/08\/\" target=\"_blank\">whole collection<\/a>.<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>September<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/SurpriseFromBelow.jpg\" alt=\"Carolina mantis Stagmomantis carolina peering straight down at the photographer in the leaves below\" width=\"730\" height=\"514\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18342\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>This one just didn&#8217;t fit in with the collection of other images I got that day, but there is a definite air of surprise from this Carolina mantis (<em>Stagmomantis carolina<\/em>) peering down at the nature photographer shooting straight up at it from underneath the leaves. I did a job on one of my shirts getting this image, since I failed to notice the goose shit on the ground where I sprawled supine to get this perspective. The sacrifices I make&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>September&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/09\/just-some-casual-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Just some casual shooting<\/a>, getting fartsy in my birth month. Go me!<\/p>\n<p><strong>October<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/PhloxSnail.jpg\" alt=\"unidentified snail on wild blue phlox Phlox divaricata divaricata\" width=\"730\" height=\"539\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18343\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>There were a lot of unused images for October, but I went with this one for the composition and because I didn&#8217;t feature any of the snail photos at all that month<strong>;<\/strong> the runner-up was another perspective on the tiny frogs <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/10\/the-nights-get-chilly\/\" target=\"_blank\">found here<\/a>. The conditions are natural, courtesy of a misty morning (like today.)<\/p>\n<p>October&#8217;s choice(s)<strong>:<\/strong> It has to be <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/10\/the-myth-of-live-and-let-live\/\" target=\"_blank\">The myth of &#8220;live and let live&#8221;<\/a> for the message and writing, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/10\/keep-coming-back-to-em\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keep coming back to &#8217;em<\/a> for the photography and video.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/VeryLateMantis3.jpg\" alt=\"Carolina mantis Stagmomantis carolina peering from longneedle pine cluster\" width=\"400\" height=\"560\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18345\" \/><strong>November<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another that narrowly missed getting into the post at the time, I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll agree that I couldn&#8217;t pass up this perspective on a late mantid. Another Carolina mantis, this one in more typical coloration, and really only a couple of meters from the last we saw in this post.<\/p>\n<p>November&#8217;s choice<strong>:<\/strong> I have to go with <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/11\/depends-on-where-you-look\/\" target=\"_blank\">Depends on where you look<\/a> for the fall colors, including some not typically associated with fall (or even seen in such a manner.)<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>December<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FadingFog.jpg\" alt=\"lone twig on a foggy morning\" width=\"730\" height=\"1014\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18346\" \/><br clear=\"all\"\/>This one was in the running for December abstract, until I got the photo that I ended up <a href=\"http:\/\/wading-in.net\/walkabout\/2015\/12\/decembers-abstract\/\" target=\"_blank\">using<\/a>.
