Just under two kilometers from where I used to live lies the Indian River. The full, proper name is "Indian River Lagoon" because it was eventually realized that the body of water was a saltwater sound or inlet, and not a river at all. But locally it's still called a river, and the locals will look at you funny if you call it anything else...

So, since it's saltwater and open to the ocean, the occupants of the river are not typical of what you would expect to find in a shallow, minimal flow inland waterway. Which makes it all the more interesting.
