I grabbed this shot on the spur of the moment as a hidden brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) launched from his perch and arced out over the water. Lighting conditions at the time had made the photo largely monochrome anyway, with the water being almost slate grey, so I simply desaturated it and boosted contrast a little to define the textures sharply, making sure the pelican stood out with a slight adjustment to the midpoint.
