Impressions
monochrome brown pelican Pelecanus occidentalis

Taken from the back of a dive boat, entering the bay on the return from a snorkeling trip. We had been looking at the fascinating coral reef that borders the Florida Keys, my first such excursion. This brown pelican was incredibly blasé about the boat bearing down on it, and unhurriedly swam out of our path.

The remarkably smooth water was great for delicate tones, both in color and B&W, almost giving an impressionistic background to my subject, who stands out from it nicely. Another one that, in color, decorated my walls for years.
