I was thinking about the animated feature Ratatouille earlier. The head chef, Skinner, was the villain in the movie, but I’m not sure why. His primary action throughout was trying to prove that Linguini was harboring a rat in the kitchen, which was true it even turned out that Linguini was a fraud and the rat was guiding his actions. Other than that, Skinner

Earth rules!
It’s Earth Day, the day we celebrate our planet’s independence from the Barren Hegemony of the Solar System! It was a hard fought battle, especially since there was no one to fight it, but we (well, not specifically us the planet, anyway) persevered!
We typically celebrate our defiant animus by going outside and gloating. Admittedly, some people (you know, them) do things like
Call ’em as they lie
Maurice Williamson, a member of New Zealand’s Parliament, addresses the floor yesterday on a bill that would amend the state of marriage to apply to same-sex couples as well:
Initially, I really liked his statements. There’s still (despite my efforts) a lot of emphasis in this country on not speaking sarcastically, especially in something as official as government assemblies. It was refreshing

Well, it’s my 500th post, provided you ignore some deleted update markers and having to rebuild the blog long ago when the last software failed to perform, and the idea that everything I write goes through a few drafts. But anyway, it’s an important milestone, since it’s halfway to 1,000 posts, which is where I actually get readers, right? Nice

“Hello?”
“Hey, Al, whatcha up to this afternoon?”
“Uhh, wrangling spiders.”
Long pause. “Wrangling…”
“Spiders, yes.”
Another pause. “Is this difficult?”
A shrug [yes, I shrug and gesture while on the phone.] “It’s frustrating at times, but a skill set like everything else.”
“Probably not like everything
Odd memories, part nine
It’s funny – as a species, we seem to have a propensity for discovery, to explore uncharted areas in the hope/belief that something magical awaits just over the horizon. It’s probably responsible for most of our explorations across the planet. There is definitely a cool feeling when you’re traveling, and you see a new and interesting place awaiting you on your path
Changing perspective
I just find this amusing. The Girlfriend, like probably 85% of the world’s population, isn’t terribly fond of bugs, most especially not the big ones. But she’s watched me pursue numerous arthropodic subjects, and still finds fascination in the details revealed from macro work.
The net result of this is seen here, what I’m fairly certain is an Acanthocephala declivis,
The Ghost of Christmas Past
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
But at least I waited a day just to thwart all that goofy ‘Caturday’ stuff…
It’s original
So, here’s a thought I had the other day about the nature of good and evil, which theologians and philosophers call theodicy I’m pretty sure philosophers have a name for those little lint balls that you get in your navel. And theologians have some kind of explanation that they’re god’s plan – just not how or why.
Anyway, genesis tells us that everything was hunky-dory
Odd memories, part eight
When living in Florida in 2004, I was in an apartment complex with a central pond, which was only six meters from the back side of the apartment. This was a sliding glass door leading onto a screened patio, and during the warmer months, this door remained open while I was home (during the hotter months, however, the air-conditioning was on so the door stayed closed.)
At about three AM one morning,
