Estate Find 59

Looked out through the screen door to Walkabout Studios this morning (did I mention that I have a screen door now? I’m very pleased with it,) and spotted something sticking up from the grass right in my line of sight, not six meters away. It looked more obvious than this, because once it saw me opening the screen door (did I mention?) it ducked down a little.

Sidetracking (literally)

Just throwing this down for giggles. As I was sitting down to do a few of the in situ shots of the last Estate Find, I heard a rustling in the taller grasses/weeds very close behind me. It wasn’t a deer as expected, and wasn’t showing above the grasses at all, but was easy enough to find. So while I was there, I shot a quick video clip.

Just once, part 22


This week we have a female common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) – I believe, anyway. It was the closest match that I could find, but since there were no males in evidence, I won’t say that I’m 100% certain (the males being more distinctly colored.) read more

Visibly different, part 21


For our opening image this week, we have a female southern black widow (Latrodectus mactans,) the first that I’d seen. It dates from 1991, and was found in a rock cleft on a trail that I frequented – getting her out was a challenge, because widows are shy and prefer concealment, and of course I was endeavoring not to get bitten.
