A quick survey

Just a moment of your time, for statistical purposes.

A friend of mine is suggesting I reactivate my FaceBook account (Facebook? faceBook? faCebOoK? Whatever.) I had one, many years back, started just to see how social media would advance interest in the place where I worked (Answer: it couldn’t.) I dumped it because it bored me to tears, and I couldn’t find any personal value in it either.

But everyone is doing it, right? So, for instance, it would advance knowledge and interest in this site itself (which predates FaceBook,) right?

So, all you have to do is reply is you’ve ever been brought here by a FaceBook thingy, or even linked to anything here yourself. Or, simply if you presently have something on your own wall or tree or whatever that fits right in with my expressed interests here, that I would be interested in forwarding or commenting upon. Sorry, I don’t have any buttons to click, because that’s not really involvement, is it? I want to hear real comments, something that shows neurons were engaged. A random number doesn’t mean anything to me.

I even waited until April 2nd, because.

Fire away! I’ll be taking replies for the next 60 days.

  1. Wow! What a serendipitous post. Though, first off – Greetings Al! Thanks to your site, I have whiled away quite a bit of time this morning wallowing in its depths on a rainy day, but with great enjoyment in finding a seemingly kindred spirit on so many levels. Funny you should post this question today, as I actually linked to one of your posts from my Facebook page this morning. And that was prior to stumbling across this post. I have a love hate relationship with social media, but like any ‘new’ media there are always multiple perspectives, and I try to take some of it with a grain of salt.

For instance, some people were opposed the Gutenberg press when it was invented? They thought the proliferation of more easily available books would somehow dilute thought and the educational institutions (and likely the church was concerned with its corner of the market as well), so on discovering that nugget, I always try to think about new communication outlets from multiple perspectives. And there is always dissent against anything new, in some fashion or another. But sometimes, it’s just a change, neither positive or negative, just different.

With regards to social media, like many things, it is but a tool, and it can be used for a lot of different purposes: connecting with friends, building a brand (your own or a company), building a business, or just cataloging moments in life for whatever purpose you do it for. And like any tool, what works for some, may not work for others, and it just depends what you want to get out of it.

But if you did decide to start up any social media from this site, I’d be happy to be one of your first
‘Likes.’ And even if you don’t, know you have another interested reader.
