Ah, there they are

The thick snow and the frozen pond caused a near=total cessation of involvement at the pond edge – no ducks, no geese, no nutrias, no beavers. Just some grackles and blackbirds. We dropped some corn on the edges and across the ice a little, just in case, but even the trail that someone had blazed through the ice had refrozen completely over.

I witnessed a quick pass yesterday around midday, read more

Taking its time

After the predictions that continued all day yesterday, we expected to wake up to noticeable snow this morning, and we did, kinda, but not at all what we expected, just a bare dusting of scattered flakes that, even at this latitude, they’d be embarrassed to call, “snow.” I went out to capture what I could, since I needed to do the month-end pics anyway, and spent read more

Estate Find LI

As we come to the penultimate Estate Find for the year, I have to admit that, while a few of them were punted or downright skipped, there was still a surprising amount of new finds, observations, behaviors, and so on. And here we add another new species, at least to me and to the blog:

My exposure to the varied duck species of North America has been fairly limited, and so I wasn’t in the habit read more

Found footage

I can’t believe I missed these clips when putting together the compilation. Well, okay, I can, since I forgot that I attempted to get some underwater footage of their zoomies with the Ricoh WG-60 waterproof camera, but the pond water was far too murky for that. Anyway, a brief interlude:

Listening to The Girlfriend’s baby talk is still amusing…

A moment of color

Just a quick shot from this morning’s frenzy, snapped in the middle of a video clip. There are two things of minor interest within, the reasons I’m posting this. The first is, this was a little before sunrise, or perhaps right at astronomical sunrise (actually, the timestamp is pretty damn close to this mark,) but well before the sun would peek through the trees. However, read more

Full circle?

Several days back we looked out and suddenly found mallards out there on the pond, after having them all disappear sometime in July I believe. This was noteworthy by itself, to a small degree, but there was an aspect that made us a little excited, in that, some of them might have been ‘ours.’

You see, over the summer we raised a trio of orphaned mallards and, well, no point in repeating read more

Not snakes

Back on Wednesday when it was Word Snake Day, I went down to Goose Creek State Park specifically to find some snakes, which failed miserably. This did mean, however, that I got into a few areas that I hadn’t been before, and I went prepared for other subjects, so I captured a few images that worked for the overall bloggetty theme, if not for the day itself. So we now get to those.

Ducking in here

Okay, listen – I already have the Estate Find post written for this week, that will appear in a few hours (thus the same day,) and it’s a little easier on my recordkeeping if I keep posts on the same day in both alphabetical and chronological order – that meant I had titles beginning with “A” through “Er” to work with. Plus I’ve gone all week with read more

No numbers this time

I get a little tired of numbered posts, even though I’ve been the one that established them in the first initial place, and we had a ‘Sorting Finds’ post just two weeks ago. But in that intervening time, I collected over 700 more images before I even got the chance to back up the files to an external drive (I have two internal harddrives mostly for backups, and a backup read more

Sorting finds n+11

I’d put off this sort a little too long, especially since I’m getting new pics pretty much daily, so I had to slog through over 1,700 images this time – it took a while. But naturally, I ran across a few to feature that I hadn’t immediately put to a blog post, and here we are.

This… is a sparrow. I think. What species of sparrow, I read more
