I left you hanging with yesterday’s end-of-month abstract, so I am making good on it and revealing just what it was now. This is almost disorienting to me, because the weather has changed drastically since it was taken and it really wasn’t that long ago, after the sleet and freezing rain. I had this in the back of my head for a few days, just as I’ve done for several years prior, when I remember to check that is (which is infrequently.) But the setting moon was going to be just 1.1% illuminated this evening, right after sunset, and the sky was crystal clear, so I elected to try again.
The turtles outdid themselves today, and I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to post another photo. There’s nineteen of them on this little tussock, now known to us as “Turtle Island,” because of course. And there’s even room for more if they’re careful (which they often are not.)

This is, most likely, an eastern mud turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum,) but truth be told, there is a fair amount of variability in markings that cross over with the striped mud turtle, especially in North Carolina where the striped mud turtle is

The day was quite warm, nice spring weather, and the Carolina anoles (Anolis carolinensis) knew it of course.
