Closer than meteors

… in more ways than one.

On this recent trip, we had one good electrical storm come rolling in with plenty of warning, and being on the open lake meant that we could see it in the distance while approaching. Ah, the perfect opportunity to get lightning that would normally be hidden by ‘the horizon’ of trees, buildings, and basketball players! Except that it was before sundown, so read more

New York: The non-raptors

Between the two trips, I got a remarkable number of images and video clips, which has taken no small amount of time to sort, resize, and/or edit into finished video – there’s one included here, and at least two more waiting in the wings. I will apologize in advance for the instability of the segments therein, since the visits to the refuge were as time allowed and I never planned read more

New York: The… somethings…

It’s been a while getting to this point, because I had to shoot some video for it, which took even longer because I had to reshoot one of the clips when it turned out badly, and then of course all the editing and voiceover hoohah that goes along with it.

Anyway, what we’re talking about today are fossils. On the trip up to central New York last month, I got the chance to revisit a fossil read more

New York: Meteorology

While in New York, I was again staying on the banks of Cayuga Lake in a Gatsby mansion, which gave me ready access to sunrises, sunsets, and a decent view of any storms that might happen along, especially since the best view was westward into the prevailing winds. I was only there for a read more

Switching ruts

At times past, I’ve realized that I’m getting into a rut, posting too many images of a particular topic, mostly mantids and frogs. I have also said that I wasn’t much of a bird photographer, concentrating on other subjects (like mantids and frogs.) Well, at least I can switch ruts, read more

Last one, I promise

Last sunrise video, that is – I’ll have just a couple more beach trip photos after this…

I came loaded for everything on this trip, especially video, which I’ve been trying to tackle more often naturally, there weren’t a lot of subjects that benefited from video. But there was one that I was really trying to get…

The last morning there, the conditions looked promising read more

Still at it

It’s another attempt to get that elusive green flash on video, doing it at sunrise because sunset wouldn’t provide the view needed. The bad weather had cleared, but the temperature hadn’t risen yet, and it was far from comfortable on the beach this just goes to show how dedicated and hardcore I am.

By the way, there’s a balance point when placing the tripod, because you want read more

Not birds, not beachy

I have just a couple of photos that were taken during the beach trip but aren’t beach related, so we’ll throw them down now.

Within the first day, we would look out the back side of the condo over the moderate expanse of lawn there, bordered by a thicket that separated the lawn from the sound, and see a little medium-brown mound moving around at times. I knew them on sight, having dealt read more

Broken promise

So Wednesday’s morning out at the beach got off to a good start…

… and almost immediately devolved into rain that lasted all day. Worse, it got damn cold too. We spent the rest of the day indoors, muttering over the weather and idiotic gas situations, but at least played games in the evening. This video was about everything that I shot.

By the way, I apologize for pointing out in read more
