Note, too, that a significant amount of my macro work and even quite a few videos are all shot at night, mostly because that’s when certain subjects appear, but also because it’s easier to get close to those same subjects
Originally, I was going to do this about night photography in general, with a subset of photographing the moon itself, then realized that the moon alone had enough for a full post. So other kinds of night photography will be along in a later post, perhaps next week. No promises though.
As a bare minimum for chasing moon photos, I have to recommend a firm tripod and a remote shutter release, because
So, I should be catching up with writing some posts that have images awaiting usage, or editing video, or cleaning up Walkabout Studios, or any number of other things, but instead I went out last night to use the bright moonlight for some experiments. Which turned out okay, really, and that’s better than a lot of experiments that I do, one of which is another waiting post.
The back forty of
The other evening I was out, for some reason without the camera, and witnessed something that I knew was going on from time to time, but usually too far off to do anything useful about. I debated about specifically trying for some pics, which would require a nighttime stakeout, but never got beyond the contemplation stage.
Then tonight, I lucked out a bit.

I don’t know, I think this was three nights ago, I just didn’t post it then. But while doing something else in the yard, I went past a dog fennel plant that was starting to get a little tall and found this:

Not really, but last night the temperature dropped more than it had in weeks, coupled with high humidity, and dew formed with a vengeance, which we also hadn’t seen in weeks – it doesn’t often hit the dewpoint overnight in summer here. And so, there were a couple of subjects to be found because of this.

It’s now this scattered occasion when we see a mother wood duck (Aix sponsa) visit with her brood, and it’s routinely been at a time when I’m unprepared this is because they can see us easily even when we’re in the house watching out the windows, which are too distorting to actually shoot through. I have two pairs of very similar photos for you to evaluate, and all I’m looking for is which you like best. Not asking about artistic merit, or which shows better details, or whether I should give up photography and go back to, um… something… just which
