Now that the bloggarootie seems to be back to perfectly (well, nominally) functioning order, I thought, Should I go ahead and squeeze one last post and a handful of photos out before the day is up? and naturally followed with, Why not? I mean, the photos have already been shot, of a decent subject too – it’s not like I’m forcing anything (unlike, you know, certain

Took long enough
So, this is the other video that I’ve been trying to finish up, the notorious one mentioned in previous posts. It did not help in the slightest that, before getting the chance to edit together the clips, I continued to add more to them.
But yeah, the discoveries on the property keep right on happening. It’s certainly not boring in any way. Well, at least not for us…
You can see that
Perhaps more often
But cute helps
Another video here, which makes this the [insert accurate count here] one for the year – it looks like I’m branching out into videography more than a little bit. And yes, more of the same subjects, but listen: I’ve spent very long periods of time featuring insects and spiders and lizards and worse, so at least we’re dealing with something cute right now.
Semi-routinely, when
Estate Find XLIX (IL)
Credit for this one goes to The Girlfriend, a discovery made while she was distributing the thrice-daily ration of corn for the various critters that come to partake we now have (at least) two more:
But we’re not letting it go at that, because I have still images too.
When she came to get me, I knew the camera and long lens was still affixed to the tripod in the upstairs bathroom
Due to popular demand
Yes, it’s time for a wood duck update – it’s been a few weeks after all. The broods that visit still remain incredibly wary, requiring no small amount of sneakiness to photograph or video – their progress in getting used to us is not at all what we’d hoped, but we take solace in the fact that this also means they’re hypersensitive to any real threats that may
Eagles and lesser
I’m finally getting around to posting ‘part two’ of the Jordan Lake outing mentioned earlier, which is not the Jordan Lake outing from yesterday, which yielded only cruel juvenile woodpeckers. I had to split up the photos because there were too many, and so we get to the more specific topic of raptors.
The outing started out with a lot of promise, given this appearance within ten
Still green
I had a few of these images waiting for an opportunity to write them up (while giving a little space from the last post about them,) and just now, I added some more. The raptors from the previous lake trip are still waiting in the wings – a ha ha ha.
We’ll start with the oldest, dating back to September 20.
This minuscule juvenile green treefrog (Dryophytes cinereus)
Visibly different, part 35
Our opening image is crappy – I’ll admit that, but it’s kinda the point of these posts so don’t get too excited. It comes from 2018 but isn’t really the first image of a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in the wild that I’ve taken – it’s the first that I can lay hands on. But first, a little backstory.
This area of central NC had never been a decent
Not a promise, mind you
Stopped down at Jordan Lake yesterday to do a few tests, and just see what was happening.
Results: Tests weren’t promising, and not much. Distant osprey, and an eagle before I had my camera out.
But as I stood in a familiar location, I heard some cheeping and caught a flash of movement, then had to stake out the area for a little bit.
Discovery: The nest is reoccupied.
