Estate Find XLIX (IL)

Credit for this one goes to The Girlfriend, a discovery made while she was distributing the thrice-daily ration of corn for the various critters that come to partake we now have (at least) two more:

But we’re not letting it go at that, because I have still images too.

When she came to get me, I knew the camera and long lens was still affixed to the tripod in the upstairs bathroom read more

One tree, two days

The Girlfriend is fond of Japanese maples and we arrived here at the new place (it’s been over a year now, perhaps I should stop referring to it that way) with a few in tow, obtaining several more in the past year, but there were already two established on the property: one perpetually deep red variant up by the mailbox, which has made the read more

A few quick portraits

Just a handful of wildlife portraits obtained within the past few days – they mostly speak for themselves.

How long has it been since we’ve had an arthropod? Too long?

I said it was misty last night, and you didn’t believe me. This katydid did, however.

This Canada goose was waiting for me to finish distributing corn so it could take a break from chowing on pond weeds. read more

Let’s catch up with the wood ducks

I know I tend to cycle around the same handful of photo and video subjects herein, but let’s face it: I have easy access to several different forms of wildlife without even leaving the property, so this is what I’m going to have the most photos of, as well as being able to observe behavior better than I ever have before. At least I haven’t fixated on just one subject…

So yes, read more

You don’t say?

Last Friday, we featured a video of the return of the Canada geese (Branta canadensis) to the pond after their curious disappearance months previously the count was always either six or eight geese at any given time. A few days after that, I was looking out the bedroom window just after waking up in the morning to see nothing out there, until a flash of read more

Estate Find XLV

We hope you’ll join us in welcoming back our old friends – unless of course they’re not actually our old friends, in which case we welcome some new ones, even when they’re not as friendly.

As I said in the video, the Canada geese (Branta canadensis) have been missing from the environs since May – the last time they appeared was to read more

Just because, part 55

A few photos sitting largely by themselves, just gotta clear some of the folder out.

Out the other night with the long lens attached, I fired off a few frames handheld at the waxing crescent (nearly half, or first quarter) moon high in the sky, adjusting focus manually each time. This one came out the sharpest, and this is a full-resolution crop from the center – that’s read more

Nothing exciting this week – with the exception of what’s already been posted, it’s been slow here, with a lot of rain, and believe me, I don’t consider Canada geese (Branta canadensis) anything remarkable. That said, as they started moving from the lower pond to the main pond right out back, we decided to see if we could habituate them a little read more

Up too early

One of the cats making a lot of noise this morning woke me up far earlier than I ever should have been, given the time that I went to sleep last night/earlier this morning, but once up, I noticed the nice pall of fog out over the pond and went exploring. One set of photos is going to wait until Friday’s Estate Find, unless I get something even better before then, but we can have these now:

Sorting finds n+10

It’s funny – I finally sat down yesterday to clear out the burgeoning Sort folder of new images, slotting them into their respectful spots (which includes the trash bin,) and less than 24 hours later, that folder is already up to 71 images. Some of those you’ve already seen, since the occultation photos came in there, but some will show up on Friday.

For now, we have a handful that read more
