Saturday night black & white

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been setting aside various monochrome experiments for an eventual post which, so it appears, has now arrived at Gate 12. Take care when removing items from the overhead bins…

Last one, I promise

Last sunrise video, that is – I’ll have just a couple more beach trip photos after this…

I came loaded for everything on this trip, especially video, which I’ve been trying to tackle more often naturally, there weren’t a lot of subjects that benefited from video. But there was one that I was really trying to get…

Still at it

It’s another attempt to get that elusive green flash on video, doing it at sunrise because sunset wouldn’t provide the view needed. The bad weather had cleared, but the temperature hadn’t risen yet, and it was far from comfortable on the beach this just goes to show how dedicated and hardcore I am.

By the way, there’s a balance point when placing the tripod, because you want read more

Broken promise

So Wednesday’s morning out at the beach got off to a good start…

… and almost immediately devolved into rain that lasted all day. Worse, it got damn cold too. We spent the rest of the day indoors, muttering over the weather and idiotic gas situations, but at least played games in the evening. This video was about everything that I shot.

By the way, I apologize for pointing out in read more

Grey and green

So let’s see, what to tackle with the first of the beach posts? How about a familiar subject?

We’ll start with sunrise on the first two days. We’d driven out Saturday and met friends out there, so it turned out to be a late night, and I did a little poking around in the dark to see if the marsh crabs were active (they were, a little) but without any intention of doing photography read more

In 2005, I was living alone and thus wasn’t decorating a lot for the holidays, but I did run a single strand of lights along the railing of the balcony deck. Generally, we get one snowstorm a winter in NC, January or February, so in mid-December it’s more likely to be rain. I decided to play around with the lights and the small-aperture starburst thing, and liked what read more

The golden hour

You know, poetic license is all well and good, but you’d think photographers could be more specific and descriptive. The periods where the sun is low on the horizon are usually called the “golden hours,” but the colors are often not just gold, and spend more time in the various orange hues than yellow or gold. We could have the amber minutes, and the saffron, the read more

Why are these not online?

Some years back I created a collection of 5×7 prints in a matched boxed set, with mats and clear envelopes, so I had a portable gallery of images to show to publishers and art directors and all that – nicer presentation than a portfolio folder, easier to flip through. I selected a wide range of images, but concentrated on the fartsier ones instead of, you know, detail read more

Branching out

Not gonna say a lot about these, because it’s a little hard to type right at the moment, but here are a couple of pics from Monday’s sunset and Tuesday’s successive sunrise – not too often that this happens for me, except at the beach sometimes. These are both local, however. The sunset above was from Jordan Lake, looking in much the same direction that the read more
