“Bokeh” is one of those photographic terms that’s a little obscure, defined at times in different ways, and has a varying impact on composition. Basically, it refers to how the out-of-focus portions of the image look, especially the highlights. In the case above, it applies to the branches in the background, which we know are branches because we have a

Paalam, January!
I have a confession to make: I shot nothing even remotely resembling an abstract this month. We’re going with archive images to see January off on its ice floe.
Annnndd this isn’t really all that abstract, though I like it anyway. It comes from way back in 2004, I believe in Duke Forest, but someone may recognize that sun from somewhere else, and I’ll
And take your year with you
So here we are at the end of the month, and somehow at the end of the year – at the exact same time too, who’da thought? I admit to shooting extremely little this month, and even less that could be considered ‘abstract’ that I did not, thoughtlessly, already feature. I did toy around with freezing soap bubbles again when the temperature dropped low enough, but was not achieving
Why is this still here?
Starting to catch up on a few tasks here and there, and went into the image stock folders on the magic meme box (what some stodgy people call a ‘computer’) to see how much needed to be cleaned up in there. And realized that I still have a ‘Facebook’ folder with a handful of images in there.
You may have noticed the anti-social media widget over there on the sidebar, and if
Still works
I mentioned more photos, and I deliver! Before christmas, even.
First off, we continue the thread of finding things, with this little discovery:
That’s the egg case (ootheca) of a Chinese mantis, definitely this year’s, so I have the first one to watch next spring – so far it’s been the only one found on the property, but I’m still watching. This is on
Younger Me was better
Seriously, I have no motivation to go out and chase photos, partially because there’s little to shoot and the weather hasn’t been that cooperative – while it hasn’t been terribly cold out there, I’m noticing it more this year for some reason (probably that “old” thing,) and so haven’t felt like trying to find subjects. There remains the
Saturday night black & white
Over the past several weeks, I’ve been setting aside various monochrome experiments for an eventual post which, so it appears, has now arrived at Gate 12. Take care when removing items from the overhead bins…
This green heron from several weeks back was
On this date 56
We have another sporadic throwback today, a peek at what was happening in years past, and this time we have two from the same day, which was 11 years ago. As I suspected, it was a weekend, a Saturday to be precise, and following a snowstorm the previous day or so. I had gone out once the roads were clear to see what might be found that was scenic, but the snowfall wasn’t significant enough
On this date 52
And here we are – the 52nd week of the series, and thus the last ‘On This Date’ post of the year! Except, no, we’re better than a week away from the end of the year, aren’t we? That’s what I get for starting this on the 1st. And seriously, what kind of creator makes a solar or sidereal year with such an odd number of hours in it? Sheesh…
Anyway, we’ve
On this date 51
In 2005, I was living alone and thus wasn’t decorating a lot for the holidays, but I did run a single strand of lights along the railing of the balcony deck. Generally, we get one snowstorm a winter in NC, January or February, so in mid-December it’s more likely to be rain. I decided to play around with the lights and the small-aperture starburst thing, and liked what
